What a nest removal visit covers

Stinging insects defend a nest aggressively. A nest the size of a golf ball in June can be the size of a basketball by September. Spraying it yourself from a hardware-store can is how many stings happen. Our crew has the gear and the right product for each species.

Each job starts with locating the nest and identifying who lives in it, because paper wasps, bald-faced hornets and yellow jackets nest differently. We also check the surrounding area for secondary nests, since a large property often has more than one colony. Then we apply a treatment suited to the location and knock down the colony. We remove the nest where practical so it does not attract scavengers.

  • Nest location and species identification
  • Treatment of aerial nests in eaves, trees, sheds, soffits and porches
  • Ground nest treatment for yellow jackets in lawns, banks and mulch beds
  • Wall-void and attic nests treated through the entry point
  • Removal of the nest after the colony is dead, where accessible
  • Advice on sealing entry gaps and reducing return nesting

Who is nesting on your property

Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped combs with exposed cells under eaves and railings. Bald-faced hornets, which are actually large wasps with white-and-black faces, build enclosed gray paper nests in trees and on buildings. Yellow jackets are smaller, bright yellow and black, and often nest in the ground or inside walls.

Colonies start from a single queen in spring and peak in late summer, when worker numbers and aggression are highest. Nests in busy places, such as doorframes, grills, playsets and swing sets, are riskier than ones forty feet up in a tree. Yellow jackets also scavenge meat and sweet drinks, so cookouts draw them toward people.

If wasps travel in and out of a crack in siding, a soffit gap or a hole in the ground, assume a nest is close. Keep kids and pets away. Do not plug the hole, since trapped wasps will chew into the house.

Why timing matters

Late summer is peak season, when workers are most numerous and sugar-hungry. They turn up at soda cans, trash bins and cookouts. Treating a nest early in the season, when it is the size of a walnut, is easier and cheaper than waiting until fall.

How a same-day call goes

  1. Call and describe

Tell us where the nest is, its size and shape, and how close it is to doors and play areas. Do not knock the nest down or spray it from close range. A photo from a safe distance helps.

  2. Schedule

Same-day visits are common. Evening and early morning treatments are best, since most of the colony is inside the nest.

  3. Identify and approach

The technician confirms the species, gauges the nest size and chooses a protective plan for the location.

  4. Treat the colony

We apply a residual dust or liquid that workers carry deep into the nest, which stops the colony faster than a quick knockdown spray.

  5. Remove and seal

Once activity stops, we remove accessible nests and close gaps in siding or soffits where wasps entered.

  6. Recheck

Returning foragers may show up for a day or two. If activity continues after that, call us and we will return.

What affects the price of nest removal

Pricing follows the difficulty of the nest, not a flat rate. Where a ladder, lift or wall opening is needed, the quote reflects it. A small paper wasp comb at ground-floor height is a quick job. A bald-faced hornet nest thirty feet up a tree takes more time and equipment. So does a nest in a wall void or a large yellow jacket colony in a bank.

Species, height, accessibility, number of nests and whether we need to open a wall all play into the quote. Multiple nests on a property are usually more efficient to handle in one visit. Barns, sheds and detached garages around farmsteads often hold several, so we check every outbuilding.

We quote before work starts, and the price reflects what we are actually doing rather than a flat rate that ignores the nest.

Allergies, honey bees and Indiana rules

If anyone in your household has a known sting allergy, keep a safe distance and call right away. Anyone stung who develops swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, or dizziness needs emergency medical care first, then pest control.

Honey bees are valuable pollinators, and we do not exterminate them. If a swarm or hive is on your property, we will refer you to a local beekeeper who can remove it alive. Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are a different matter, since they sting repeatedly. Look for a fuzzy, round body and pollen on the legs to spot a honey bee, and a smooth, narrow-waisted body to spot a wasp.

Pesticide use in Indiana is regulated by the Office of Indiana State Chemist. That is context about the system, not a credential of ours. Treated nests can still hold live wasps for a day, so leave them alone until we confirm activity has stopped and you are told it is safe to touch.

Wasp, Hornet & Yellow Jacket Nest Removal — FAQs

Can you remove a hornet nest the same day I call?
Often, yes. Same-day visits are common for stinging insects, especially when the nest is near a door, play area or driveway. We cannot promise a specific arrival window, and evening is usually best because most of the colony is inside the nest. Call early and tell us where it is and how large.
What should I do if yellow jackets are nesting in my lawn?
Keep people, pets and mowers away from the entrance. Do not pour gasoline or plug the hole, which provokes the colony and sends trapped wasps digging out. Mark the area from a distance and call us. We treat ground nests at dusk when the colony is home and stops activity within a day or two.
Will the nest come back after treatment?
The same nest will not, but a new queen can build nearby next spring. Wasps rarely reuse old nests. Removing the nest, sealing gaps in siding and soffits, and keeping eaves clear all lower the chance. If a spot gets nested in repeatedly, an early-season preventive treatment can stop new queens before they start.
Are bald-faced hornets more dangerous than wasps?
They are more defensive. Bald-faced hornets sting repeatedly, and a disturbed nest sends out a large number of workers fast. They can also spray venom toward the eyes. Their nests are often high, though, so the danger is mostly to people who bump or hit them. Paper wasps are usually less aggressive.
Do you remove honey bee swarms or refer a beekeeper?
We refer you to a beekeeper. Honey bees are protected pollinators, and we do not exterminate them. A swarm clustered on a branch is temporary, and a local keeper can usually collect it live. If you are unsure whether the insects are honey bees or wasps, call and we will help you identify them.
